Smart city — what it is?
An increasingly popular term in the media is smart city, which describes a city that wisely manages its resources and through use of modern technology works to improve the quality of life for its residents. Although you may not feel too enthusiastic about this term, the idea behind this concept is well-thought-out and certainly attractive.

What is the definition of smart city?
The most basic definition of this term is that it is the collection of innovations, which are designed to meet new challenges posed by the increasing scale of globalization in the world. The migration from rural areas to cities is nothing new, likewise in Poland we can observe situations in which large cities absorb the surrounding towns into their territories. It is no different in, often more, developed countries. It creates a multitude of problems, from which the most obvious are: access to electricity, waste management and traffic on the streets. As a society we have to manage these sectors to the best of our abilities and modern technology can help us with that, in this case it is the Internet of Things — Internet Rzeczy.
IoT (Internet of Things) – definition.
Internet of Things is a concept which assumes that more and more devices will be connected to the net and able to communicate with each other. Although it sounds like a futuristic idea, even today we can observe this trend. Refrigerators, ovens, and vacuum cleaners that require Wi-Fi access to function are becoming the standard in their categories. That is why it’s a phenomenon we can’t simply ignore — sooner rather than later it will become a part of our lives — if only because of the large number of functions of such devices (which means more convenience for the user).
Internet of Things is based on the use of Artificial Intelligence, which increases the autonomy of the devices. It is worth noting that the computer, which is tasked with thinking for itself, is making fewer and fewer mistakes with each passing day, as a result of learning from its past failures and successes. The level of machine training leads them to be nearly 100 per cent effective in performing their tasks.
Energy management in smart city.
A very important part of life for the cities of the future is how they will deal with energy production. Global warming is becoming an obvious fact, as noted by governments of many countries who are choosing to move away from fossil fuels in the coming years.
Finding alternatives for effective, yet polluting coal or oil, is a priority for the world. It can be the nuclear energy, but also renewable energy sources. Although the latter are not able to provide all the city’s electricity needs at the moment, they can be a significant help in supplying it to smaller devices, including electric scooters and cars or even smartphones.
The humanity looks for effective solutions.
Due to fossil fuel use, entire cities are drowning in smog. It’s responsible for many diseases, including pulmonary diseases and cancer, and the death toll caused by them is rising. Time is running out to overcome this phenomenon, however the world seems to be coping with the challenges posed to it. More and more we can see regulations, which prohibit diesel cars from entering city centers, and also social campaigns that are encouraging the use of public transport. Plenty of small vehicles are starting to appear, such as: electric scooters that allow you to move quickly while not polluting the environment.
Can the city handle so many new developments?
As the number of types of rapid transit devices, and the machines themselves, that need charging increases, the cities may find it difficult to have accessibility policies for all of them. It’s hard to imagine a situation where the streets of an urban agglomeration will be filled with stationary chargers, each of which will offer charging for a different device. This is an obvious problem that will become one of the most important challenges for the cities in the future.
